Your Pattern
What This Looks Like
Why Your Nervous System Does This
When we experience something too overwhelming, unsafe or traumatic, our nervous system does exactly what it was designed to do. It activates. Fight, flight, freeze, fawn or shutdown, whatever it takes to keep us safe and help us survive that threat.
But here's what most people don't know. When the threat is over, the body doesn't always get the memo. And every time something carries a similar flavour to that original experience, whether it's in a relationship, at work, in church, or just a familiar environment, your nervous system reads it as the same threat and fires the same response that kept you safe the first time.
So you find yourself reacting, shutting down, or swinging between both, not because something is wrong with you, but because your nervous system is doing its job. It just hasn't learned yet that the threat is over. That the you standing here today is older, more resourced, and capable of things the younger you wasn't.
That's not a faith failure. That's biology. And it can change.
